Creed Chameleon – Paradise Life Relaxin (ft. Bambu & Prometheus Brown)
Remember this video of Bambu, Sabzi and I in the studio with Creed Chameleon in Hawaii last September? Well, that track, “Paradise Life Relaxin” is on Creed’s new album, The Ultimatum, which just dropped last week. Produced by Osna (whose May Day mixtape is chock [...]

Bambu: Slow Down (with Prometheus Brown of Blue Scholars) from Beatrock Music on Vimeo.
Working with Bambu, director Luis Ivan Garcia and crew, Imix Bookstore, and a gang of Filipinos on this video was a great experience. Fun, professional, efficient. Lots of community support behind this one, and I’m glad to see it reflected in the [...]

Kisapmata (Mike De Leon, 1981)

After a couple years of scouring the internet and Filipino video stores in many cities, I finally, randomly, chanced on a rare VHS copy of Kisapmata (1981) in Daly City last month. Lino Brocka might have been the Philippines’ most prolific and politically committed filmmaker but Mike De Leon is the most consistent and, possibly, [...]

Un prophète (Jacques Audiard, 2009)

It’s been awhile since I was blown away by a gangster flick. Public Enemies came close but left me wanting, and a few recent foreign films (Tsotsi, Gomorrah) were worthy but overhyped. There was a time when the homies and I would watch Blood In, Blood Out and Menace II Society ad nauseam. Hip-hops mid-90s [...]

NEW MUSIC: “Michelle Malkin” a Sade Redux

When all else fails, listening to old records and watching garbage TV always somehow provides refuge from the songwriting rut. Here’s an example.
One: I was bumping some old Sade in anticipation of her new Soldier of Love album. Two, I was flipping channels during halftime of a UW basketball game and landed on Fox News, [...]

Gomorrah (Matteo Garrone, 2008)

I tried watching Gomorrah (hailed by some as “our generation’s Scarface” – even getting a quick Criterion DVD treatment) one night and fell asleep not long after all those dudes get murked in the tanning salon. Probably 10 minutes in. The second and most recent time I’ve seen it was off Sabzi’s Macbook screen in [...]

VIDEO: Behind the Scenes: Bambu “Slow Down” Music Video

Some behind-the-scenes footage of Bambu’s “Slow Down” music video shoot in L.A. last week at Imix Bookstore. The track, which I’m featured on, is the lead single off Bam’s upcoming Paper Cuts EP and is produced by MTK. The filmmaker-homie Tad Nakamura (Pilgrimage, A Song For Ourselves) came through and shot some behind-the-scenes footage.
