MUSIC VIDEO: Keegan DeWitt “Hearts Beat Loud” (dir. Matt Jay)

Longtime readers of this blog know that I’ve been digging the young homie Matt Jay’s film work for a minute now. “Hears Beat Loud” is a simple video: a group of friends on a nighttime galavant through NYC featuring skateboards, subways, street food vendors, flashlights, the Ace Hotel, photo booths, city lights reflecting off water, all culminating in a beautiful sunrise at the Brooklyn Bridge. In its simplicity are the tiniest moments that really matter which often get overlooked by less attentive filmmakers: a smile from afar, a head resting on a shoulder, the slight clutch of hands. It’s a visual poem that matches the song’s frenetic pace. Frequent foreground obstructions evoke a feeling of being there and not there. Somehow, the viewer is both a voyeur and a participant.
