KFOX Fresh Tracks, 1985 (mp3)

Suddenly, I have some unexpected free time after all three of our home shows this weekend were canceled due to the snowstorm.
Back in 2003, I curated an exhibit at the Wing Luke Asian Museum titled “It’s Like That: Asian Pacific Americans and the Seattle Hip-Hop Scene.” One person that would figure definitively in this history is, of course, Nasty Nes (Nestor Rodriguez), a Pinoy dude, co-founder of Nastymixx Records, and one-time DJ for an emcee/DJ named Anthony Ray, later to be known worldwide as Sir Mix-A-Lot.
In the spirit of this cold, recession-plagued giving season, I wanted to share this little gem that I got from Nes himself for the exhibit. It’s a full, uncut episode of Fresh Tracks that aired circa 1985, featuring Nes hosting and Mix-A-Lot rapping (dissing UTFO?). And scratching. Alot. I wasn’t around to hear this when it aired, but Nes was always that dude to me when I started tuning into Rap Attack on KCMU 90.3 (pre-KEXP days).
